The collapse building
The Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineering Technicians, Makanjuola Ganiyu Jimoh has called for proper registration of technicians to reduce incessant incidences of building collapse in the country.
Jimoh, who led members of the society on a courtesy visit to The Guardian, noted that it is time for craftsmen to realise that their services require professionalism, which is only achievable if they can function as a body and maintain standard in the society.
According to him, “If the laws of the land were followed, craftsman, carpenters and engineers needed in a construction site should be registered. In the past, there is what is called ‘daily schedule of duty’, when proper records are kept on site, then people will take responsibilities and it will in turn help identify causes of building collapse.
“There are monitoring units of the body in the states and the way to go is to visit sites and ensure that non-registered members are arrested and work is stopped, this way sanity will gradually return and people will realise that you don’t just employ anybody.”
He further called for professionalism for carpenters, mechanics, and technicians and enjoined the public to ensure that whoever they recruit for duties should be duly registered with COREN.
“This will ensure that the individual is held liable for any faults emanating from his services. A member also will be protected and insured in case of accidents while carrying out his duty,” Jimoh added.
